I everyone, hope you and your hounds are enjoying our Spring - at least
while it is not raining. Wanted to let everyone know that I will be shutting
down my phone number when I move in about a month. My number, 317-293-2502, has
been the main GPA Indy contact number for almost 6 years - so, there are a
lot of hounds out there with the GPA Indy tag and my phone number on their
collars. You should remove that tag soon. The new GPA Indy number is
317-354-6858 - feel free to contact them if you would like a new GPA tag.

Please also be sure to have personalized tags on your dogs - I put my dog's
name and my cell phone number on their personal tags. I cannot tell you how
many times someone has retrieved a greyhound on the loose and the only tag
the dog had on was the GPA tag. At that point, unless I have gotten a call
from someone who is looking for their dog, all we have to go on are their tattoo
numbers. Luckily, many times, I was able to make a match and identify the
owner of the dog from our database. But tattoo numbers do not always work; if
the dog is not a GPA dog, he won't be in the database and sometimes,
especially on older dogs, the numbers are hard to read. Never hurts to microchip
either.

Summer is the time of year when dogs tend to get loose...from kids and lawn
workers leaving the fence gate open, to dogs bolting out the door when there
are a lot of family and friends coming and going...some people think that
retired racers look at an open door like a starting box and an invitation to bolt
at full speed so, it is important to be extra careful. If you are having
people over, think about baby gating your dogs away from the area where people
are going in and out. And keep a lock on your fence gate Also think about
a protocol of action if your dog does get loose:

Do not panic but know time is of the essence.
Notify GPA Indy.
Have a list of phone numbers of people you could call who would be willing
to immediately launch a search.
Notify your neighbors, the police and local animal protection/control
authorities that your dog is on the loose.
Make a supply of flyers with your dog's picture on it.
Have some extra leashes on hand for the people helping you search.

I hope you all will take some time to relax with your hounds this summer,
and be safe! Hugs, Kat
P.S. If anybody needs to reach me, you can always call my cell 317-361-2835.
