Dry Food Added to Pet Food Recall
April 18, 2007 - We have received news that Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Pet Foods has issued a recall for some of their dry and canned foods for cats and dogs. Melamine has been found in a rice protein concentrate used as an ingredient in some Natural Balance pet foods. The affected rice protein was imported from China by Wilbur-Ellis, a San Francisco-based company. The affected diets, which are being recalled include: Venison and Brown Rice canned and dry dog foods and dog treats; and Venison and Green Pea dry cat food. Natural Balance Pet Foods is working closely with the FDA and has ceased use of the rice protein ingredient supplied by Wilbur-Ellis. Melamine is not allowed in human or pet food. While not highly toxic, it causes kidney damage, and has been linked to many pet deaths in the past several weeks. It can also cause gastrointestinal upset. Symptoms of kidney failure are increased thirst and urination, decreased appetite, lethargy and vomiting. If your pet has symp
toms of renal failure, please call us at (317) 257-5334 to make an appointment to bring your pet in immediately. In cases where the toxicity is caught early and treated aggressively, pets have recovered.
As with previously recalled foods, if you suspect your pet may have eaten contaminated food by Natural Balance Pet Foods:
Save all unopened cans or pouches.
Find any empty cans or pouches that may still be in your garbage and save them in plastic bags.
Make an immediate appointment to have your pet examined and kidney function evaluated via laboratory testing.
If your pet is experiencing any symptoms of kidney failure (increased thirst and urination, decreased appetite, lethargy and vomiting) and we are not open, please contact Circle City Veterinary Emergency Hospital at (317) 872-8387 for immediate treatment.
Please call us at (317) 257-5334 if you have any questions regarding the pet food recall.
