Animal first aid & CPR training

scheduled for Aug 9 at IVEC

INDIANAPOLIS-- Would you know what to do if your dog was hit by a car and suffered traumatic injuries?

Would you know how to react if your cat ingested a common but dangerous household cleanser?

Do you know how to approach an injured animal without getting hurt yourself?

Indianapolis Veterinary Emergency Center (IVEC) wants to teach you.

IVEC medical professionals will present"In An Emergency - Animal First Aid & CPRon Saturday, August 9.The training session will be held at IVECs new state-of-the-art emergency and critical care clinic, 5425 Victory Drive (immediately south and east of the I-465 and South Emerson interchange near Beech Grove).

Doors open for registration at 8:30 am with class scheduled from 9 am to 1 pm.Cost is $30 per person and includes an animal first aid manual, instruction from experts in emergency veterinary medicine, extensive hands-on training, refreshments, and a tour of the IVEC facility.

Pre-registration and pre-payment by July 31 are required.Checks or credit cards (Master Card, VISA, Discover) will be accepted.Class size is limited to 40.For additional information or to register, call Allison Frane at Bonneau Production Services, 317/846.8965.

Physicians from IVEC - Central Indiana's original 24-hour emergency and critical care clinic known for its PET-E-911 emergency call line - will lead attendees through a variety of first aid scenarios.Head trauma, shock, bleeding, heat stroke, drowning, electric shock, paralysis, and other emergencies will be discussed, followed by hands-on practice.Attendees will learn how to approach an injured animal, how to muzzle and/or restrain, how to carry and transport, and how to bandage and splint.

A "ResusciDog" - a life-sized canine mannequin - will be used to demonstrate various treatment techniques, including CPR.IVEC personnel will have a variety of other animals present and prepared to interact with class participants.Attendees are asked not to bring their own pets to the session.

Over the past few years, IVEC has conducted Animal First Aid & CPR training for over 250 Central Indiana public safety agency personnel who work with K9 units.The August 9 public session is patterned after these earlier classes in which techniques for sustaining the lives of K9 corps members during medical emergency situations were taught.
