Hi guys, last year we started Hound Hikes, as a way for Greyhound adopters to get together outside of meet and greets and dog drops to socialize. It was a lot of fun, but unfortunately the weather was not that cooperative with when we were looking to have a hike; to avoid conflicting with our recurring meet and greets which are held on weekends, we did the hikes on Friday nights. This month has five weekends, and as our recurring meet and greet schedule is set up for a course of four weekends, we will not be conflicting with any meet and greets if we have a Hound Hike tomorrow, Sunday 8/30. And the weather could not be nicer!
So, what I'm proposing is a Hound Hike on the Indianapolis Canal. The end of the Canal is behind the Clarian Health Pathology Lab, just two short blocks away from the parking lot where we have our dog drops. The entire loop of the Canal, from start to finish is three and one half miles. If you and your greys would like to participate, but that distance sounds too far, there are several pedestrian bridges across the Canal so you can make a shorter trip. And there are numerous benches and places to rest. But it's just going to be a leisurely stroll, these are greyhounds we're talking about after all! And you will be surprised at how fast the time and distance passes when you are in good company! We found that out last year.
Let's shoot for arrival at the location of our dog drops between 2:00 and 2:30pm tomorrow and we'll set off for the Canal at 2:30. Be sure to bring poop bags, and it wouldn't hurt to bring along some water for your greys to drink before we start and after we finish. And yourself too, if you like. No retractable leads, please! Just be sure and watch your greys getting too close to the Canal, as they may not recognize that it is not a solid surface and try to step off into it. For several years now, we've done a special event called Scales and Tails at the Indiana State Musuem, which is located on the Canal. And each year, we have one or more of our volunteer Greyhounds try to step into the Canal!
After the dog drop this afternoon, I walked the Canal with Apple, Butch, Speed and Explosive, and was stopped several times by people asking me about Greyhounds. While I was talking to the first of the people who stopped me, a couple of guys passed us, and I heard one of them say, "There's MORE Greyhounds! I've seen more Greyhounds today, than I've seen in my entire life!" I'm thinking that they must have passed the dog drop before they started walking the Canal! So hopefully, we'll have a big turnout tomorrow and have LOTS of people saying the same thing!
Let me know if you have any questions! Hope to see a lot of you with your Greyhounds tomorrow! Thanks, Sharon
